Damage to agriculture due to the effects of El Niño has reached over P6 billion, the Department of Agriculture reported during a Saturday news forum. However, DA spokesperson Arnel de Mesa said the amount was lower than they had expected, according to a Super Radyo dzBB report by Jonathan Andal.De Mesa said the agency expected the damage to reach 120,000 hectares of crops. However, based on the latest data, only about 60,000 hectares were damaged.
De Mesa said they did not expect damage to agriculture to increase after PAGASA observed signs of a weakening El Niño across the tropical Pacific Ocean.Further, the harvest season was over and farmers were now preparing for the next planting season.De Mesa said the low damage to agriculture was also due to preparations made by the government and other sectors. The DA said the MIMAROPA Region saw the most damage to agriculture due to El Niño, which reached P1.
