MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte "admires" former Marine Captain Nicanor Faeldon for his honesty during his stint at the Bureau of Customs, fighting cigarette smuggling, Malacanang said Monday.
Duterte last week fired Faeldon from this third post as Bureau of Corrections chief, after a Senate investigation uncovered alleged corruption in the grant of "good conduct" credits for prisoners' early release. "Hanga si Presidente sa pagka-honest niya kasi nga kung talagang iko-consider mo, kumita sana yun sa Mighty cigarette," Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo told reporters, referring to a cheap tobacco maker.
"Hanga siya sa honesty ng mama , in other words he was thrown into a situation where he could have corrupted himself but he did not bite kaya humanga si Presidente dun ." The Office of the Ombudsman earlier said it started its “exhaustive” investigation on the controversial early release of the convicts due to GCTA or good conduct time allowance."The guilt of Mr. Faeldon, whether criminal or administrative, will depend on the result of the investigation and recommendation of the inquiring body like the Senate as well as the Ombudsman."
