As the country grapples with COVID-19, the Department of Education (DepEd) officially launched the “new face” of its Brigada Eskwela (BE) and Oplan Balik Eswela (OBE) programs to fully assist the preparation of the stakeholders for the coming school year (SY) 2020-2021 scheduled to start in August.

For the first time, the DepEd has decided to jointly implement two of its major school opening programs.

In 2008, Umali said that the BE was institutionalized through DepEd Order No. 24 wherein “stakeholders may volunteer their time and skills to ensure that public schools are ready for the opening classes.” He noted that from 2016 to 2019 – under the leadership of Briones – became more than cleaning, painting/repainting and minor repairs because other partnership activities were also integrated.

Under the joint BE and OBE Framework and Action Plan under the New Framework, DepEd said that stakeholders can support the this year’s “Brigada” by donating thermal scanners; hand sanitizing equipment or materials; and printing of COVID-19 and sanitation/proper hand washing hygiene information materials to aid BE and OBE in introducing protection and health protocols to learners and teachers.

Among the suggested partnership engagement activities for BE, Umali explained, will also include disinfection of schools; mobilization of essential items; conduct of virtual psychological first aid sessions/psycho-social interventions; virtual orientation activities with partners and PTA on DepEd’s LCP; distance learning; and other virtual or online school-based initiatives or virtual partnership appreciation.

Unlike before when there is a physical set up for the OBE, Mateo said that DepEd will rely on virtual communication on school opening related concerns. “This is challenging – especially in terms of disseminating and gathering of information to parents and learners,” he admitted. Mateo said that in the duration of the OBE initiative, Public Assistance Command Centers will be set up at the central, regional, and schools division offices nationwide to “ensure that issues and concerns are immediately addressed in their respective areas.”
