2,300 new COVID19 cases confirmed among Filipinos abroad; total rises to 5,184

MANILA - The number of Filipinos abroad infected with the coronavirus disease 2019 reached 5,184 after the Department of Foreign Affairs reported 2,300 new cases Sunday.

The DFA said the spike is “due to some late reports received by Philippine posts in the Middle East where many host governments implement strict data privacy and confidentiality rules.” The agency also said there is no new fatality reported, with the total number of deaths decreased from 340 to 339 due to delisting of 1 death in Europe. The patient originally reported as dead was confirmed to be in critical condition, the DFA added. The spike covers some late reports received from the Middle East. A separate communication to explain this large increase is released along with these infographics.

As of May 31, The number of coronavirus cases worldwide topped 6 million, with over 360,000 deaths, since its first emergence in China in December 2019, according to the World Health Organization.
