Manila, Philippines - The Dasma Cavite Spartans defeated the Cagayan Kings in Game One but needed the Armageddon tie-break in Game Two to advance in the Northern Division semifinal round of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines All-Filipino online chess tournament on Wednesday, May 15, 2024.The Spartans opened their quarterfinals duel versus the Kings with a 15-6 victory but Cagayan bounced back to knot the count at 10.5-10.5 in Game Two.
IM Daniel Quizon, playing white, bowed to IM Ronald Dableo of Cagayan in 66 moves of Reti Opening on board two. 'If Black manages to draw the game, the draw is counted as a win in the context of the tournament. So by nature, an Armageddon game cannot end in a draw. Black also starts with lesser time on the clock than white,' explained Spartans coach Benjie Bercadez.
