MANILA, Philippines: Jirah Floravie Cutiyog, a grade 9 student from Bethel Academy of General Trias City, prevailed over older male opponents and reigned supreme in the 1st Kagawad Wilson Fauni Rapid Invitational Chess Tournament held at the Imus National High School Covered Court Bucandala 3, Imus City, Cavite on Saturday, April 6, 2024.

The 15-year-old Cutiyog scored a perfect 6.0 points to finish at solo first place in the tournament. Cutiyog defeated Thleser Nunez in the first round, Renato Agra in the second round, Genesis Jahk Andres in the third round, Deorico De Paz Jr. in the fourth round, Yuri Lei Paraguya in the fifth round and Roger Abisan in the sixth and final round to complete the sweep.

Catiyog, whose chess campaign here and abroad is supported by General Trias City Mayor Luis Ferrer 4th, Vice Mayor Jonas Glyn Labuguen, Cavite Sixth District Rep. Antonio Ferrer, sports head Rodolfo Commandante Jr., Bethel Academy of General Trias Cavite and Arena FIDE Master Ederwin Estavillo, also competed in the 2023 World Youth Chess Championship held in Montesilvano, Italy last November.Maryss Annxeniel Caldoza of Imus, meanwhile, placed second overall last Saturday with 5.
