“The two most common issues that Filipinos are struggling with are proper diet and nutrition for non-communicable diseases, and proper nutrition intervention among the sick and hospitalized patients,” said Woolbright.
Instead of treating nutrition as a “last resort,” the newly launched CAN intends to prioritize nutrition for both healthy individuals who want to prevent illnesses, and more importantly to sick patients who want to improve their conditions though medically-backed nutrition evaluation and meal plans. Dr. Maricel Malazarte, Vice Chair of CAN, highlighted the importance of providing nutrition support for patients post-admission to the hospital. She pointed out that this extra support can help them to have a faster and smoother recovery process.
Additionally, she warned patients against using herbal supplements in the market today without consulting a healthcare provider as this could lead to unexpected and potentially dangerous side effects.
