Some 154 persons deprived of liberty received their certificate of discharge from the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City on Monday, January 23, 2023, as part of the government's jail decongestion program. A total of 340 persons deprived of liberty were released from operating prisons and penal farms on Monday, according to the Bureau of Corrections . Based on BuCor data, 128 were released on parole, while 165 had served their maximum sentence with good conduct and time allowance . Thirty-five who also served their sentence with GCTA were released under Department Order No. 953. The order states that the release of PDLs sentenced to life imprisonment or high-risk inmates shall only be implemented with the approval of the Justice Secretary.Of those released, 154 were from the New Bilibid Prison, 31 were from the Davao Prison and Penal Farm, and 33 were from the Correctional Institute for Women.
A culminating program was held and attended by Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla and BuCor officer-in-charge Gregorio Catapang Jr.The Department of Justice said that around 4,000 PDLs were released last year.
