Senate mulls five years jail term for lecturers who sexually harass students

The Senate on Wednesday revisited the sexual harassment bill which was sponsored by Ovie Omo-Agege and passed by the 8th Senate.

According to the bill, an educator will be “guilty of committing an offence of sexual harassment against a student if he/she has sexual intercourse with a student who is less than 18 years of age; has sexual intercourse with a student or demands sex from a student or a prospective student as a condition to study in an institution, or as a condition to the giving of a passing grade or the granting of honour and scholarships.

The bill, however, suffered a major setback as it was not given Presidential assent after its passage by the 8th Senate. The reintroduced bill is also sponsored by Mr Omo-Agege. The reconsideration of the bill is coming days after a BBC investigative report exposed two lecturers of the University of Lagos for alleged sexual harassment of female students.Aisha Buhari wants urgent action to address sexual harassment against students

Na wetin next for Nigeria be this 😳

Good. How many jail term for National Assembly members and other government officials who harass and rape their victims even those that were caught and that are still sitting comfortably in the hallowed chamber?

That's a fantastic gesture but must cut across board including those loading them in coaster buses for pleasure.

What of politicians that have been stealing, kidnapping ,assaulting people and raping the economy?

This is an embarrassment. Something more severe pls Find out what other nations are doing .

But what about students who sexually harrass lecturers, what happens to them? The bill needs to cover sexual harrassment as a crime generally rather than focus on ivory towers alone WahidSaka debo_adeniran naijama GbengaGOLD toluogunlesi KOgundamisi Ayourb IleowoKikiowo

How many years for embezzling constituency development funds?

This is a welcome and a wonderful effort from our great chambers that is red and green chamber.May Allah continue to help you to make Nigeria great.

Only 5 years? Smh

So fast!!! About the “slapper”?

Only!!! That's too Small. That's 2.5 years. What happened to 20years at least others can learn better.

Good idea

And how many for politicians who sexually harass women?

The lecturers are not the only ones in this, the law should cover all those working in institutions of government or private sector.

Good move. They should also prescribe same dose to the one that slapped a girl at the sex shop

This is a bill from 8 assembly.....

That is a good move for now; we expect stipper punishment if they continue.

Good, but wasn't a similar Act passed by the 7th Assembly?

When it reach in riche man son Stroy will change

Abeg, make dem pass the law fast, fast.

Good news, hope judges won't be bribed.

Nice. One.
