The Chairman, House of Representatives’ Committee on Army, Abdulrazak Namdas, speaks with LEKE BAIYEWU, on the security crises under the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari , the A-29 Super Tucano fighter jets recently procured by Nigeria, his Adamawa State governorship ambition and other issues
It appears the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari . who has the powers to make such declarations is reluctant to designate bandits as terrorists… At the initial stage, some prominent Nigerians like Governor Nasir El-Rufai expressed reservations about payment of ransom and negotiation with the bandits but many families are being forced to pay ransom to secure the release of their abducted loved ones, while these monies are being used to acquire more weapons with which the populace is terrorised.
Two, which is very important, is that we must have an Armed Forces that would have enough resources for close to 10 years, starting from today. We must have a long-term plan. Now that we have the kind of challenges that we have, let us work towards it for the next 10 years. There are countries that when they parade their equipment alone, no bandit will even say ‘I will go to Country A or B’ because he knows that they have the power.
If anything at all, we have improved. In 2015 when this government came into power, the situation was even worse. You and I are in Abuja today; you know the number of attacks that happened in Abuja before this government came. You know how many local government areas in this country were held by Boko Haram and they were hoisting their flags. Even in my state, Adamawa, about seven local government areas were involved. So, this government has done its best.
First, let me be honest; if you have many resolutions that are not respected, as a parliamentarian, you will not be happy. There is no doubt about that. But, again, it is not all resolutions, even if you are in the Executive, that you will continue to implement. You will try to look at them and seek advice to see whether you also have to take certain steps. I think our level of understanding with the President is such that certain things are really being put in place.
You know who Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is. He is the leader of the APC in Nigeria. When your leader falls sick and the President of the country even visited him; many governors visited him, we too went there to visit our leader to see how well he was recuperating from the sickness. It was a mark of respect and to show concern for someone who is a leader and who has played many roles in this government. We felt that ‘all these stories going round; let us see him for ourselves.’ And we saw him.
