At the risk of sounding judgemental, and with due respect to his fundamental right to presumption of innocence, it’s a mystery that the unfolding story about Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari surprises anyone.
In the aftermath of the agitations for the scrapping of the Special Armed Robbery Squad in October last year, the panel of enquiry set up to investigate alleged infractions by members of this squad got an intriguing petition. This petition by a businessman, Afeez Mojeed, alleged that policemen led by Kyari extorted the sum of N14 million from him in 2014. Mojeed, who was quite a spectacle while giving his testimony, also alleged that he suffered 14-day torture in the hands of the operatives.
Reports in the past few years showed that Kyari had become so powerful and overtly celebrated even to his disadvantage. While the decoration of accomplished law enforcement officers isn’t out of place anywhere in the world, Kyari’s acclamation was taking a pedestrian dimension.
A couple of weeks back, he left his duty post in Abuja to join a stupendously wealthy showbiz personality who was burying his mother. Four weeks on, the event remains the talk of the town owing to the obscene display of wealth and unprecedented abuse of the Nigerian legal tender that followed it.
Police are Nigeria problems
You need to update the article to correct the claim, Mr Mojeed according to his lawyer was extorted of 150,000, 41 million and another instance, your article says 14 million! And your bias says its first time he is being accused but thats because you chose to ignore our cries b4
As noted in the article, Nigeria necessarily soils the hands of those who engages in building it at a close range. This will be so for some time. Nigeria is a clannish society at a base level. This has to change and people must start to think as a society, to see real progress.
You're the best my friend, I love your articles. They're right on point. Wish they'd listen or read. One of the issue is misplaced priorities. Job is work. You don't get in it to be 'rich', but benefits and insurance makes a huge difference. As a result, lots of unchecked abuses.
As I’ve often noted, one should necessarily know how a modern State/Police Force/Justice System works in other to successfully run same. The Problem with Nigeria are Nigerians - the people do not know how a functioning society n it’s institutions work, so can’t build one. Simple.
