Her body arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos on Friday at 11 pm via Air Côte D’Ivoire, after which it was moved to Ibadan. The 21-year-old Babalola’s death on November 14 shocked many Nigerians who had been following her case, expressing their displeasure and disappointment on social media.
She was a trader in Bondoukou, Cote d’Ivoire, and her apartment was burgled by an Ivorian in September 2019. She reported the incident to the police, but the DPO informed her that the suspect was his nephew. So, he asked her to take a settlement of about N100,000 to drop the case, which was lower than the N300,000 worth of stolen belongings.
But rather than get justice, Babalola was consequently arrested after rejecting the settlement, charged to court and sentenced to 10 years in prison for human trafficking, but died in prison.
