In this piece, ENIOLA AKINKUOTU delves into the weak enforcement of Lagos State building and planning laws which led to the Ikoyi building collapse that left no fewer than 45 people dead

However, like the ill-fated ocean liner, Titanic, that ended up at the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912, the ‘Luxury in the Sky’, which ought to have added to the opulence of the idyllic Ikoyi landscape preserved for ultra-rich Nigerians like Aliko Dangote, Mike Adenuga, Folorunsho Alakija, Diezani Alison-Madueke, Bola Tinubu and others, became a graveyard of sorts not only for the 45 bodies recovered, but for the dreams of those who made deposits and hoped to one day live...

“We can guarantee the integrity of the first two buildings and also work done up to the fourth floor of the third building supervised by us provided specifications have been met in terms of the required concrete strength. This we do not have control over as we do not have the concrete cube test results of each stage of the building till date. Also, note that we are not taking responsibility for any other construction errors that may have occurred overtime on the project.

A now viral photo also showed the building leaning towards the right barely days before it came crumbling down. The General Manager of LASBCA, Gbolahan Oki, also stated after the building collapsed that the materials used in constructing it were inferior. According to the activist, whenever a building is being constructed and it strays from its approved plan, unscrupulous government officials only mark the building not in the spirit of enforcement, but in a bid to extort money. The senior advocate said once money exchanged hands; the government officials would turn a blind eye.
