The House of Representatives’ Committee on Niger Delta has decried the slow pace of work on the East-West Road, demanding details on the rehabilitation and expansion project since the contract was awarded in 2006.

The committee had grilled the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godwill Akpabio, asking him to provide details of the variations in the cost of the project since it was awarded. The administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo had awarded the contract in 2006, while the current regime led by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari , revived the abandoned project.

The road project is a four-lane dual-carriage 361km highway which crosses several states such as Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa-Ibom and Cross River. At the 2022 budget defence session held by the committee on November 3, 2021, a video footage of which our correspondent viewed on Sunday, several lawmakers decried the project has no definite completion date despite the huge sums being allocated to it.
