Ovid, N.Y. — A historic fire tore through the small village of Ovid Tuesday night, leaving behind a massive trail of damage that could've been worse if not for the hundreds of first responders who fought the flames."The members that we have in this department are the workhorses in this department," said Ovid Fire Chief Timothy Westlake.

Many of the volunteer firefighters who battled sub-zero temperatures and water issues at Tuesday night's devastating fire in Ovid are members of the Amish community. "We would not be capable of doing what we do without the community of the Amish being involved with us," Westlake said."Former Chief Palmer worked with those guys, family level that chief had with those guys. He's what brought them into our fold," he explained. "We miss him very much. He was with me all night the other night guiding me through the whole thing. If it wasn't for him, they wouldn't be here, and it's our responsibility to keep them here.

Even as firefighters fought that fought that massive fire in Ovid, those same crews responded to two other fires in the surrounding area, including one in the nearby hamlet of Willard.Despite the brutal wintry conditions over that 24-hour stretch, Westlake said his team was ready to keep the fight going, as long as needed.

"The morale of the volunteers in this area is just overwhelming," he said. "IF we got a call like that right now and it wasn't even in this area and we were asked to go, you'd see the same group of guys out there. If it was 11 hours, they'd be there 11 hours again."In regards to the Ovid fire, we're told all of the donation centers for those impacted are actually overrun with items.
