In the wake of a massive fire that tore through the village of Ovid, the community is coming together to support nearly two dozen people who lost their homes.
Donated items for Ovid residents displaced by a fire the previous night are collected Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025. Ovid, N.Y. — "We are a great county, and I am moved by the amazing outpouring of support for all those in need," he said. "It is truly a team effort.""One of our members of the VFW, his daughter was in one of the apartments that burned down and she’s got three kids, so we’re collecting stuff for the family over at the VFW here," Fellers said.
The Ovid Community Thrift Store has opened its doors to fire victims, allowing them to take anything they need for free.Fellers noted the town's history of coming together in times of crisis. "It’s always something like this, we had the same sort of thing 10 years ago across the street, and the whole town comes together," Fellers said. "And the village of course, everybody knows everybody, and you want to take care of everybody and that’s what we’re trying to do."
There is a pressing need for clothing, household items, food, personal hygiene items and monetary donations. "Certainly for the family that I’m picking up for," Fellers said. "They’ve lost everything, totally everything. Kids have no clothes, no bedding, so they’re starting from scratch.""Hopefully it’ll make them feel a little bit better," Fellers said. "Right now they’re pretty devastated, so anything is going to help. And cash also, so we’re going to try to have a fundraiser for them to get some cash in their pockets too.
