Demolition work continued Thursday, January 23, 2025, in Ovid , roughly 48 hours after a devastating fire destroyed four buildings on the village's Main Street. Crews are still working at the scene, cleaning up the debris from the fire, but it's not just debris — it's water that has frozen due to the cold temperatures. The building on the corner of Main and West Seneca streets wasn't just a group of apartments and businesses — it was a hub for many throughout the village.
'It's irreplaceable,' said Timothy Warne, a longtime resident of Ovid. 'I don’t know how people in this area are going to get by. I mean, it chokes me up right now. It’s just unbelievable.' Another longtime resident, Cameron Mollenkopf said, 'It was home. Friendly, and everybody pretty much knew each other. Small town.' Village of Ovid Mayor Aaron Roisen said the village plans to rebuild after everything is settled, but said Ovid will never be the same. 'This community has been taken away,' he said. 'And we will get through it, Ovid won’t be the same, but the impact, it’s a multi-generational impact that we will be reeling from for years to come after this. It’s just a lot to process, but like I said, we are all in it together and we will move forward.' Roisen is now focusing on moving forward. 'The 20 residents that lost their homes, the 66 people who lost their jobs, and the livelihoods of the businesses to help them recover to just make sure that they are insulated from the impact and what really their day to day,' Roisen said. 'And to try to create some stability for them is the most important thing.
