The family of a mentally-ill man who died at the Bexar County Jail last year has filed a lawsuit alleging that the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office failed to protect him and provide adequate medical treatment prior to his death. Derrick Ellison , 47, died at University Hospital on Dec. 5, 2022 after having trouble breathing while in his cell. He had been in jail since June 25, 2022 on a charge for criminal trespassing. His bail was set at $1,500.

Attorneys representing Ellison’s estate say this was a violation of Ellison’s rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
