The police officer who was dragged by a vehicle and run over while trying to stop a suspected drug dealer is improving in the hospital.

Prosecutors filed charges Thursday afternoon against the suspect, Jory Edward Nelson, 32, of Seattle. "Haney attempted to stop Nelson, and Nelson actively resisted while trying to start the BMW. Nelson revved the BMW's engine before taking off, dragging Haney, who was still in the driver's side door area. Haney eventually fell from the vehicle, and the BMW drove over his leg before exiting the parking lot at a high rate of speed," Pierce County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Elizabeth Dasse wrote in a court affidavit.
Chief Hernandez noted that Kent police may be referring additional charges to the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office for the pursuit. Dasse, the prosecutor, noted that Nelson did not have prior felony charges before this incident. The community in Milton has been showing support for officer Haney and the police department since the incident.
