The Concorde supersonic jet made its first appearance in the U.S. for the DFW International Airport's opening in 1973.
The jet — the fourth model of the Concorde developed in a $2.5 billion British-French project — cruised at 1,400 miles an hour, twice the speed of sound, from Caracas, Venezuela, to the U.S. border near Galveston, then slowed down to slightly slower than the speed of sound to reach DFW, according toFormer Dallas mayor J. Braniff International, which was evaluating the plane for South American routes, provided ground support service for the jet at DFW.Tom Sullivan, the airport’s executive director at the time, called the Concorde “the plane of the future, whether some like it or not.” The unprecedented arrival was fitting for celebrations Sullivan called the greatest transportation industry milestone since the opening of the Erie Canal in the early 1800s.
