I’m going to be 70 years old next year, but I look at the younger workers around me and I worry that if the current status quo keeps up for much longer, air travel is going to seriously suffer. My coworkers are starting families, trying to buy homes and living dignified lives. They’re drowning in bills and the wages here at DFW are simply not enough to cover the rising cost of living.
But my coworkers and I know that a safer, more efficient air travel system is possible if airlines take steps to empower the blue-collar Black, brown and immigrant-powered airport service workforce. We also know our elected officials need to take action and hold airlines accountable for the mess they’ve created.
We’ve also called on Congress to make sure the billions of tax dollars that airlines received are actually being used to improve the air travel system. Right now, our elected officials have a critical opportunity to act by writing airport service workers into the legislation reforming and reauthorizing funding for the Federal Aviation Administration by including minimum wage and benefit standards. With the deadline to pass FAA reauthorization legislation coming up at the end of September, it’s essential that our representatives fix the system that exploits the service workers powering air travel.As this chaotic summer travel season comes to a close, it’s clearer than ever that the status quo just isn’t working.
