The National Weather Service predicts up to 8 inches of snow in some areas of central Pennsylvania this weekend. The storm is expected to hit Sunday evening and last through Monday night.

Parts of central Pennsylvania are expected to see heavy snowfall this weekend, with up to 8 inches of accumulation possible in southern parts of the state, according to the National Weather Service. This weekend’s storm — which is expected to start Sunday evening and pass through the central Pennsylvania region by Monday night — will primarily affect cities and municipalities in southern Pennsylvania.

As of Saturday, forecasters are calling for a sharp cutoff in snow amounts on the north side of the storm. There is still the potential for this system to wiggle over the next day or so. There will be a tight gradient on snow amounts. Keep an eye on how the forecast evolves over the next 24-48 hours. Current forecast models are predicting between 2 and 8 inches of snow in Chambersburg, 2 to 7 inches of snow in York, under 6 inches in Harrisburg and 1 to 6 inches in Lancaster, Mount Union, Altoona and Johnstown. A winter storm warning is in effect for Chambersburg, Lancaster, York and Gettysburg from late Sunday night into Monday evening, with upwards of 5 inches of total snow likely. Those areas are predicted to see 1 to 2 inches of snow on Sunday followed by 3 to 5 inches on Monday. Bedford and Somerset were among the areas expected to have the most snowfall, with 3 to 8 inches possible by 7 p.m. Monday. Pittsburgh and Philadelphia could also see up to 6 inches of snow from Sunday night to Monday night, the NWS said. Although current models are calling for less snow in northern parts of Pennsylvania, the NWS noted snowfall totals could increase or decrease on the upper and lower ends of the storm depending on how far north or south the weather pattern moves. As of Saturday, the NWS is predicting less than 4 inches of snow in State College, Sellinsgrove, Pottsville and Allentown. Municipalities further north are all forecast to receive anywhere from 3 inches of snow to less than 1 inch of snow
