BUCKLEY (Stephen Buckley) Public editor responds to reader email.
The exterior of the newly completed Dallas Morning News building in the old Dallas Public Library, Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2017. As the Public Editor for The Dallas Morning News, I act as the bridge between our newsroom and our audience to help build trust through transparency and accountability. The Dear Public Editor feature spotlights some of the common questions I receive from readers.
Dear Public Editor: I am appalled at a headline in today’s paper: “Sense of duty apparently drove suspect.”My least favorite thing about the DMN is the word choice used in headlines and in articles that are inflammatory. Not cool!, most of which do a fine job of drawing readers into our content. They generally draw little to no attention.
And our multiplatform editors will now start their nightly review meeting earlier, allowing them to spend more time going over presidential campaign stories. Maybe most important, all editors have been “encouraged to please speak up and voice any concerns even if they are unsure if what they are raising should be discussed,” Hardy says. “The slightest amount of doubt is worthy of conversation. Our editors do a great job of reading hundreds of stories a month, and of carefully crafting headlines. The extra layers are meant to fine-tune our process even more.”Stephen Buckley is a veteran journalist and journalism professor at Duke University.
