Public editor answers a reader email about political advertising.
As the Public Editor for The Dallas Morning News, I act as the bridge between our newsroom and our audience to help build trust through transparency and accountability. The Dear Public Editor feature spotlights some of the common questions I receive from readers. When they contact me, I reach out to colleagues in the newsroom — and sometimes offer my own analysis — to provide answers. Emails here are edited for clarity and brevity.
Dear Public Editor: I was shocked and saddened by the half-page ad you published on Friday, Aug. 30, on Page 3A. The ad told us that the Democrats used money from Medicare “to bankroll their liberal, green agenda.” It warned us about the “billions for liberal spending” with a dark, morose picture of a senior couple, and told us that Medicare premiums went up by 20%. The ad then showed a picture of a smiling Sen. John Cornyn, who is fighting for by voting against Senate Bill 1246.
