The experiment received a lot of backlash from YouTube users YouTube TechNave

from the community. Now, YouTube confirmed that the test has ended, though it is still unclear whether the company would be implementing such a restriction in the future.

Replying to a tweet from a user that urges YouTube to not force a premium subscription for watching 4K content, the official @TeamYouTube Twitter account clarified that the experiment has been fully turned off. The tweet further elaborated that viewers should now be able to access 4K quality resolutions without a Premium membership.

However, YouTube didn’t specify the findings of the experiment and whether such a restriction would encourage more users to get YouTube Premium. Nevertheless, given the criticism that the company faced for only testing the feature, we’d say that maybe YouTube should not be implementing restrictions on video quality for the foreseeable future.
