PUTRAJAYA: The Transport Ministry and the maritime industry are working hard to meet the 2020 deadline to reduce sulphur in marine fuel to 0.5%.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar said the ministry is working closely with industry players on the implementation of the new regulation as well as to discuss alternative means.

“We also take note of the initiatives by several industry players to drive this campaign forward with innovative solutions, such as the implementation and development of Liquefied Natural Gas as bunker fuel as well as the supply of Low Sulphur Fuel Oil, to ensure our shipping industry remains steadfast and not affected negatively by the regulations,” said Kamarudin, in his opening speech at the 2020 Global Sulphur Limit Awareness Forum organised by the Malaysia Shipowners’ Association here.

Kamarudin said Malaysia, as an IMO Council member, is obliged to take on the challenge and will do so to ensure the shipping industry is sustainable.

Hard times for the poorJOHOR BARU: Six family members, who have been living in poverty, were shocked when enforcement officers from the Johor Housing Secretariat came to evict them from their flat. UMNO and BN have failed numerous Malaysians. How can such a thing happened? Where is the safety net? Didn't UMNO BN even bothered about such plight that's happening right under their nose all the years they were in power? The gov cannot help if the ppl themselves did not try to seek for help. And then, they blamed the gov for being heartless. This happens when ppl don't read and think for themselves. They relied on hearsay & emotions. Ppl should try to being poor before commenting like go to the gov office to seek help from them, don't be cruel. Government should Instead go and house visit and undrlerstand their plight and propose a solution
