PETALING JAYA: The season-opening Indian Open which returns after a lapse of two years has been hit by a spate of withdrawals at the eleventh hour due to Covid-19 infections.

Fortunately, it does not involve the 16 Malaysian players as confirmed by the Badminton Association of Malaysia singles coaching director Wong Choong Hann.

England’s doubles shuttler Sean Vendy and coach Nathan Robertson were the first to be tested positive prior to their departure prompting the entire squad to cancel their trip on Sunday. The others bound for New Delhi included Vendy’s partner Ben Lane and Callum Hemming-Jessica Pugh in the mixed doubles. The already depleted tournament suffered further blow when the country’s top singles shuttler B. Sai Praneeth also tested positive.

“All players as well as match officials, BWF and BAI officials, support staff, vendors and others involved will have to go through a mandatory Covid test each day outside the stadium and only after being tested negative they will be allowed inside the venue. “BAI will not compromise on the safety of the players as well as others involved and will be following all the Covid-19 guidelines given by the government.”
