Tedros says the virtual World Health Assembly will be among ‘the most important’ since WHO was founded in 1948.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Friday the event would be “one of the most important since we were founded in 1948”. Despite the tensions, countries hope to adopt by consensus a resolution urging a joint response to the pandemic. The source said countries had not shied away from thorny topics, including a call for more WHO reform after determining that its capacities “have proven insufficient to prevent a crisis of this magnitude”.

The US and Europe are at loggerheads over future vaccine access, while Washington has also accused China of trying to steal US immunisation research.
