We still don’t support three-island reclamation project, says Penang Fishermen’s Association

GEORGE TOWN, Oct 13 — The Penang Fishermen’s Association has stressed that it has never supported the controversial Penang South Reclamation project.

Referring to a memorandum submitted to the state government signed by 1,521 individuals, purportedly fishermen, in support of the project earlier this month, he said the memorandum is not endorsed or approved by Pen Mutiara. “Some were told to sign it to get new boats, new engines and cash ex-gratia so they signed it,” he claimed.

“It is not a decision of one association leader, it is not my decision, it is a decision by the grassroots members that we must uphold,” he said.

Why?

It’s Penang Fishermen inte to reject the reclamation project BUT it’ll be big loss for majority of Penang ppl if the project is dropped. It’s a simple case of ints of a few vs ints of big majority. Penang’s economic growth will be stalled by lack of land. That’s the reality.
