Former prime minister Najib Razak is said to have given Umno leaders in Johor Bahru and Padang Serai a total of RM350,000 between 2014 and 2015.
They added that the funds from Najib were meant to manage and conduct welfare programmes in their divisions. “He gave me some words of encouragement, then handed me a cheque for RM50,000 with my name as the payee,” he said when questioned by deputy public prosecutor Mohd Saifuddin Hashim Musaimi.Asmadi said he deposited the money into his own account instead of the Padang Serai Umno account as the process for the latter would be tedious.
“I was told by Tan Sri Shahrir to get the cheque from Azlin in Putrajaya,” he said, referring to Johor Bahru Umno chief Shahrir Samad. “We need at least RM600,000 to run the division because we have 86 Umno branches under our division, and we organise a lot of activities for the community,” he said.
