PETALING JAYA: The government's plan to rightsize the civil service will not affect the 1% employment quota set aside for persons with disabilities (PWDs), says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

The government will continue to preserve these posts for the PWDs, as it aims to recruit more differently-abled people, said Dr Wan Azizah, who is also Women, Family and Community Development Minister.

"There are currently still empty posts, so we want the positions specified for the PWDs to be filled up first," she told reporters after attending the Malaysian Association for the Blind excellence achievement award for the blind and visually impaired persons 2017/2018 here on Saturday . Earlier in her speech at the event, Dr Wan Azizah said that as of the end of 2018, a total of almost 3,800 PWDs, or 0.031%, had been appointed to a range of positions in the civil service.

She also revealed that her ministry had surpassed the 1% target, with PWDs taking up 144 out of the 8,138 posts available in the ministry.
