WASHINGTON, Nov 3 — The United States is set to begin giving Covid-19 vaccines to children aged 5 to 11 as soon as today, with roughly 28 million school-age kids now eligible for the shots that provide protection against the illness.

“There has been a great deal of anticipation for parents surrounding the authorization of vaccines for our children,” CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said on Monday. The federal government has purchased 50 million doses of Pfizer’s vaccine for the rollout, and has enough supply for all 28 million eligible children, US officials said this week.

So far, only Pfizer’s shot has been authorized for use in the United States for those under the age of 12. A few other countries including China are already vaccinating children.
