US targets Venezuelan foreign minister in new escalation

The US has imposed sanctions against Venezuela Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza in its ongoing campaign to pressure the resignation of President Nicolas Maduro. – EPA pic, April 27, 2019.

THE United States yesterday imposed sanctions on Venezuela’s foreign minister, escalating its pressure campaign aimed at removing President Nicolas Maduro. The action against Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza is the latest and loudest sign that the United States has no interest in negotiating with Maduro, a leftist firebrand whom more than 50 countries no longer recognise as president.
