The agencies also have limited insight into the full impact of the pandemic in Iran.

As US spy agencies seek to assemble a precise picture of the world’s coronavirus outbreaks, they are finding serious gaps in their ability to assess the situation in China, Russia and North Korea, according to five US government sources familiar with the intelligence reporting.

An accurate assessment of those countries’ outbreaks would aid US and international efforts to limit the human and economic tolls from Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, experts say. US intelligence agencies first began reporting on the coronavirus in January and provided early warnings to lawmakers on the outbreak in China, where it originated in the city of Wuhan late last year, said the sources, who asked not to be named in order to speak freely about intelligence matters.figures show, with the United States now reporting the most cases at more than 152,000.

Knowing the full extent of Russia’s coronavirus spread could be critical as it shares borders with 14 other countries and is a hub of trade and travel.
