MOSCOW, Dec 24 — Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev said today that Washington grew “arrogant and self-confident” after the collapse of the Soviet Union, leading to the expansion of the Nato military alliance.
“How can one count on equal relations with the United States and the West in such a position?” Gorbachev told state news agency RIA Novosti on the eve of the anniversary of his resignation as the leader of the USSR. “No, the ‘winners’ decided to build a new empire. Hence the idea of Nato expansion,” Gorbachev added.“I hope there will be a result,” he said.
