GEORGE TOWN: Live marine specimens in a laboratory in Teluk Bahang are dying from a pollutant that “invaded” the lab via sea water.

Although scientists have yet to identify the pollutant killing their specimens, the result was the stench of hydrogen sulfide – a toxic gas released by decaying organic matter – fuming out of the sea water used in the Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies .

She suspected a chemical pollutant and sent water samples to the chemistry team in Universiti Sains Malaysia yesterday for testing. Woo explained that when sea cucumbers feel threatened, they eject parts of their guts to scare off possible predators. Woo said they had eliminated weather problems and the earlier inter-monsoon period was not to blame.“Although it felt hot last month, it was the usual inter-monsoon.

Cemacs senior science officer Sim Yee Kwang ran a dissolved oxygen test at the farms and found the DO level at 3.32 yesterday.

Exco members agree on cutting plastic bag usageGEORGE TOWN: Penang’s quest to reduce plastic bag usage has brought political foes together in the state assembly. obviously a scam to victimize the consumers. most of the items on the shelves in supermarkets are packaged in plastics. from rice to shampoos and snacks plus thousands more. do we not have to pay 20 sen for each and everyone of them? the most common items found in rivers and seas are mineral water bottles, shampoo bottles and bags for detergents and rice, etc, not plastic bags or straws. the problem here is NOT THE PLASTICS, but the mentality of SOME people who threw them indiscreetly. these clueless people should get a bag each and go to the rivers and beaches to collect the rubbish to see for themselves what kind of plastics is found there. not making assumptions based on opinions by those who have never seen the rubbish from these places either.
