Motivated by the three-time Olympic Games silver medallist’s pep talk and a symbolic handover of his racquet during an exhibition match at the Malaysian Open two weeks ago, Tze Yong is making an impressive run in the Singapore Open.
Tze Yong has a tough job against Anthony Ginting today but with the Indonesian yet to win a title this year, the Malaysian may have a slim chance to tear the up formbook. Interestingly, both players have yet to meet on the international stage. China will have two representatives in the last eight as Zhao Junpeng will take on Nhat Nguyen of Ireland while Li Shifeng will face local hero and reigning world champion Loh Kean Yew.Meanwhile, Malaysia will not have any representative in the men’s doubles when all four pairs Mohd Haikal Nazrin-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi, Goh V Shem-Low Juan Shen, Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani crashed out in the second round.
Men’s singles: Anthony Ginting bt Lin Chun-yi 21-12, 19-21, 21-16; Loh Kean Yew bt Tommy Sugiarto 21-13, 21-17; Li Shifeng bt Koki Watanabe 21-18, 21-17; Zhao Junpeng bt Brian Yang 21-13, 21-19; H.S. Prannoy bt Chou Tien-chen 14-21, 22-20, 21-18; Ng Tze Yong bt Lee Cheuk Yiu 21-15, 21-13; Nguyen Nhat bt Mithun Manjunath 21-10, 18-21, 21-16; Kodai Naraoka bt Jonatan Christie 7-21, 21-18, 21-15.
