PETALING JAYA: Promising men’s singles star Ng Tze Yong and Co marched into the quarter-finals of the Indian Open on a day when the tournament was reduced further in strength following more withdrawals due to Covid-19 cases.

The 21-year-old Tze Yong huffed and puffed for one hour and 17 minutes to beat Lucas Claerbout of France 20-22, 21-15, 21-18 in the second round and will take on Nhat Nguyen of Ireland for a place in the semi-finals next.

It was a good day for women’s doubles pair Vivian Hoo-Lim Chiew Sien as they defeated Srivedya Gurazada-Ishika Jaiswal, a combination from India and the United States, 21-15, 21-15. They face third seeds Anastasiia Akchurina-Olga Morozova of Russia in today’s last-eight match. Peng Soon-Valeree, however, can expect a challenging time against second seeds Rodion Alimov-Alina Davletova of Russia in the quarter-finals. They did well to beat Kashish Sharma-Saruni Sharma 21-6, 21-8 in the second round.
