A man has his umbrella turned inside out as Hong Kong hoisted typhoon signal no 8 around noon on October 8, 2023 as typhoon Koinu skirted by after the financial hub was affected again by a super typhoon and historic rainstorm last month.

Koinu, packing gale-force winds of up to 144 kph , is expected to churn south along the coast of Guangdong at a pace of up to 150 kph, weakening gradually as it reaches Zhanjiang city and the southern island province of Hainan. Last week, Koinu, which means “puppy” in Japanese, killed one person and injured almost 400 people in Taiwan as it brushed past the south of the island.
