KOTA KINABALU: The local authorities in Sabah’s east coast Sandakan district have been urged to carry out pruning work on trees in the town area in order to save city dwellers from falling branches.

The reminder was issued by Tanjong Papat assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon after large branches that broke off from a tree were found on the road in front of the Sandakan Chinese Chamber of Commerce Hall in Bandar Sandakan on Friday ."Fallen branches are a safety risk for the people in the area.

"I have reported the matter to the Sandakan Municipal Council for immediate action to be taken as well as to prevent the branches disrupting traffic in the area," he said, on Friday. According to him, he had previously proposed to the SMC to prune the trees at public areas in town especially before the rainy season.

"I’d like to remind the authorities once again to carry out such works to prevent any untoward incident," Poon said.A woman was killed after a tree was uprooted by strong winds and fell on her house in the south-western Papar district on Thursday . Besides that, a couple of wooden houses on stilts collapsed and nine others were damaged due to the high tide phenomenon and strong waves in Kampung Tanjung Aru Baru later the same night.Article type: free
