Top cop To Lam sworn in as Vietnam's new state president

To Lam swears in as the Vietnam ese president at the National Assembly in Hanoi, Vietnam , Wednesday, May 22, 2024. Vietnam ’s top security official Lam was confirmed Wednesday as the nation's new president. He oversaw police and intelligence operations over a period when rights groups say basic liberties have been systematically suppressed, and its secret service was accused of violating international law.

Vietnam News Agency reported that the newly-elected president said this new position provides him with a chance to join hands with the Party Central Committee, the Politburo and the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat and dedicate all of his heart and mind to serve the country and the people following the path chosen by the Party and President Ho Chi Minh.

The new State President pledged to strictly and fully perform his tasks and authority, actively carry out the country's domestic and foreign affairs, defence and security tasks while joining the entire Party, people, army and organisations in the political system to promote the spirit of self-reliance, self-confidence, self-strength, self-resilience, and national pride.

Based on the steadfast, creative application and development of Marxism-Leninism, Ho Chi Minh’s thought and the Party's reform policy; with national independence, sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity and national interests as the top priorities; and with happiness and well-being of the people as the foremost concern, the president said he would closely coordinate with relevant agencies to effectively implement the task of building and perfecting the legal system, building a socialist...
