PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia has already begun work to change the national poverty line income threshold since two years ago, says Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed .

The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department said the government, during the mid-term presentation of the 11th Malaysia Plan in October 2018, had already initiated plans to change the"outdated" RM980 PLI threshold."We know that the 2005 methodology that was used to decide that the PLI is RM980 for a household was formulated in 2005. Because 15 years have passed, definitely it is outdated today.

"With that in mind, during the mid-term presentation of 11MP in Parliament in October 2018, the Statistics Department had already begun work to revise these figures and the findings have been presented in Cabinet. "After I complete several engagement sessions, we should be able to come up with the new figures on the national poverty line," he told reporters on the sidelines of the National Census Day event on Tuesday ."Today, the national per capita income is RM45,000, which is twice bigger than back then, so you can expect the new PLI quantum will be higher than RM980.
