While some smokers worry that quitting will take away their quick stress-reliever, research shows that those who stop actually have less depression, anxiety and stress. — TNSOne in every two persons who smokes will die of a smoking-related disease unless they quit.
However, a review, published in the Cochrane Library on March 9 , found that people who stopped smoking for at least six weeks, experienced less depression, anxiety and stress, than people who continued to smoke.Giving up smoking did not have an impact on the quality of their social relationships, and it is possible that it may be associated with a small improvement in social wellbeing.
The length of time the studies followed the participants varied, with the shortest being six weeks and the longest up to six years.Lead author Dr Gemma Taylor from the Addiction & Mental Health Group at the University of Bath in the United Kingdom, said: “We found that stopping smoking was associated with small to moderate improvements in mood.
