KUCHING: Sarawak is still short of over 3,000 doctors, a far cry from seeing an oversupply in the coming years, says Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

Based on the state’s estimates, he said Sarawak needed an additional 2,204 medical officers and 1,036 specialists.“In the last few years, many medical officers, including housemen, preferred postings which are not in Sarawak and Sabah.

“At this rate, Sarawak will not be oversupplied until well over 2030,” Dr Sim said yesterday, in reference to the Health Ministry’s projection of an oversupply of doctors from 2026 to 2030. Meanwhile, former Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the study which projected the oversupply should be reviewed, taking into consideration the demand for healthcare services in Sarawak and Sabah.

“It is prudent for the Health Ministry to take into account the figures of doctor distribution in Sarawak. “There is a significant difference in the doctor-patient ratio between rural and urban areas,” he said when contacted.
