KOTA KINABALU: A senior medical expert has suggested that those who tested negative for Covid-19 upon returning from abroad be allowed to self-isolate at home instead of being sent to designated quarantine centres.

The suggestion came from Chong En Leong, a surgeon who sent a legal notice to the Health Ministry several days ago about the poor conditions at the Sepanggar quarantine station.

"Maybe the concept of a 14-day quarantine at home should be adopted when the swab results are negative," he said, adding that however there should be daily checks by healthcare staff. The government has announced that Malaysians who return from abroad will immediately be quarantined for 14 days. However, there have been complaints about the unhygienic conditions at some of the gazetted quarantine centres in Sabah."For those showing no symptoms, they should take nose and throat swabs and be kept at the gazetted quarantine centres until the results are out within 48 hours.

"If it is negative, they should be allowed to go home for the remaining of the 14-day quarantine instead of continuing to stay at the centres, ” he said. Sabah Health Department director Datuk Dr Christina Rundi had apologised for the inconvenience after viral videos showed the conditions at three quarantine centres.Chong also asked the state Health Department to be more forthcoming on its needs as many NGOs were prepared to assist in obtaining equipment and protective gear needed by hospitals in Sabah.
