PETALING JAYA: The government’s rights commission Suhakam has expressed concern over the police’s latest use of the Security Offences Act, or Sosma, on a dozen individuals accused of links to the Liberation Tigers ofThe Human Rights Commission however stopped short of criticising the arrests, saying it has consistently viewed detention without trial, as provided for under Sosma, was “against the core principles of human rights”.
“Suhakam understands that an appropriate balance must be struck between the need to protect the nation from security threats and the maintenance of human rights,” it said in a statement. Bukit Aman last week arrested 12 people, including two DAP assemblymen, in a crackdown against what it claimed was an attempt to revive LTTE, the defunct Sri Lankan militant group which once fought a decades-old war against Colombo.
