The commonest type of stress test is to have the subject walk on a treadmill, where the incline and speed of the treadmill are gradually increased until the subject cannot continue the exercise due to fatigue, high blood pressure or life-threatening heart rhythm problems.
Stress tests are not done as a routine measure. In the past, annual stress tests were done on subjects who had no signs or symptoms of heart problems. The rationale is that heart attacks can occur suddenly and without warning, so routine checks can possibly avoid such eventualities. However, routine stress tests have not shown any lowering of heart attack rates. There are reasons for this:, heart attacks occur due to the detachment of plaque from a coronary artery.
