COLOMBO, May 13 — Sri Lanka’s new prime minister was struggling Friday to forge a unity government and forestall an imminent economic collapse after a senior opposition figure refused to helm the finance ministry.

But frontline opposition lawmaker Harsha de Silva publicly rejected an overture to take charge of the nation’s finances and said he would instead push for the government’s resignation. He is a member of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya party, the largest opposition grouping in parliament, which has split on whether to support a unity government without Rajapaksa’s resignation.

Wickremesinghe warned Thursday that the dire situation could get worse in the coming months and called for international assistance.

Unity GOVT is not that easy to form let it be any NATION. Various parties coming together as ONE to serve the Nation is a real UPHILL battle as all have their own agendas and mission respectively. Too many LIONS ON THE SAME MOUNTAIN will be seen as 'mission impossible'.
