GEORGE TOWN: A South African man was spared the gallows but got a life sentence after pleading guilty to a drug trafficking charge at the High Court here.

Electrical technician Shaun Brits, 33, from Johannesburg, remained calm as Judicial Commissioner Mohd Radzi Abdul Hamid sentenced him to life imprisonment and 15 strokes of the rotan.

"After considering the evidence by the investigating officer and defence counsel, you will be spared the death sentence and given life imprisonment from the date of arrest and 15 strokes of the rotan under section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952," he said on Tuesday . The incident occurred at 9.30am after Brits was spotted behaving suspiciously by the police at the airport.He passed out the capsules containing 522.74g of cocaine in stages.
