PETALING JAYA: The take-up rate by employers towards social protection coverage for their domestic helpers can be improved with greater awareness, says Social Security Organisation (Socso).

Its chief executive officer Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed said 7,700 employers employing domestic workers and 8,280 domestic workers had registered with Socso since contribution was made compulsory for them since June 1 last year.

Domestic workers who are Malaysian citizens, permanent residents and temporary residents are covered under the Employment Injury and Invalidity Schemes of the Employees’ Social Security Act 1969 while foreign domestic workers are covered under the Employment Injury Scheme only. Housemaids, personal drivers, personal bodyguards, gardeners, cooks, babysitters, caregivers for the elderly or patients and helpers fall under the domestic workers’ category.

“Most of the employers have started contributing since last year,” she said, adding that the requirement had also been included in advertisements for new hires.
